The Art of " " in the Kaiserbäder

The picturesque world of the Kaiserbäder is a magnet for artists. Lyonel Feininger, Rolf Werner, and Volker Köpp—their works are inextricably linked to the art history of our towns. But many other artists have also captured the unique scenery of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, and Bansin, as well as the distinctive landscape of our hinterland.

7 Times by the Sea

Sunshine, blue skies, swimmers, the sound of the sea, and a unique cultural landscape characterized by its distinctive seaside resort architecture—and, for the past 20 years, our plein air artists have been a fixture on the promenade, on the beach, or in the town of Heringsdorf, equipped with their painting supplies, bicycles, and sunscreen. A rather unusual and somewhat nostalgic sight in our seaside vacation paradise.

For the first time, a special guest was invited to the Pleinair: Wolfram Schubert, who, at 98, is the oldest painter on the team. He previously participated in the Kaiserbäder Pleinair in 2009 and 2014.

One of Germany’s best-known contemporary writers, Christoph Hein
, has been enlisted to provide literary commentary. As has almost become tradition, His Royal Highness Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia, will serve as patron of the plein air event.

For 20 years, the plein air painters have been keeping a diary of their shared discoveries of this seaside landscape—a diary in pictures.
In 2025, we will also celebrate the 205th anniversary of our town’s naming. On June 7, 1820, King Frederick William III approved the naming of Heringsdorf.

The “Villa Irmgard” museum will once again serve as a temporary art studio, in conjunction with two interesting events during this art week: Plein air painter Wolfram Schubert will read from his memoir “ICH WILL ERINNERUNGEN” on May 13, 2025 and on May 15, 2025, at 7:30 p.m., Christoph Hein will give a reading from his new novel “Das Narrenschiff” and, as an encore, “Alles, was Du brauchst.”

Exhibition

The exhibition opening, featuring the “new” paintings, will take place on May 17, 2025 (the day Lyonel Feininger first visited Heringsdorf 117 years ago) at 7:30 p.m. at Villa Irmgard.

The “Heringsdorf Speech” for this plein air week will be delivered by author Christoph Hein, who previously participated in the plein air event in 2012 and left a lasting impression with his personal account of the experience, titled “When the Earth Was Still Flat….”

Following the exhibition in Heringsdorf, the paintings will once again set out on a journey as ambassadors and will be displayed in galleries in Berlin, Templin, Schwedt, and Denmark.

Art and business are a perfect match; they complement each other in a unique way and benefit from one another. As a result, eight hotels in the Kaiserbäder will once again support the International Kaiserbäder Pleinair in 2025 through their sponsorship contributions.

Heringsdorf Art Pavilion

The Art Pavilion is located on an idyllic stretch of the Heringsdorf promenade, between the pirate playground and the rose garden. The Art Pavilion owes its unique appearance to Rügen-based civil engineer Ulrich Müther. Since 1970, art lovers have been able to admire regularly changing exhibitions here. In addition to postcards and books, selected works of art are available for purchase here year-round. Every September, an art auction is held, at which works by Usedom artists or featuring Usedom motifs are sold to the highest bidders.
