Art
the Kaiserbäder

The picturesque world of the Kaiserbäder is a magnet for artists. Lyonel Feininger, Rolf Werner and Volker Köpp - their works are firmly linked to the art history of our towns. But many other artists have also captured the unique backdrop of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin as well as the unmistakable landscape of our hinterland.

7 Painting by the Sea

The Kaiserbäder invite you to the 11th International Kaiserbäder Plein Air from May 17 to 20. Under the motto "7 Paintings by the Sea," seven selected international artists will be inspired by the landscape and atmosphere.
Sunshine, blue skies, bathers, the sound of the sea and a unique cultural landscape, characterized by its special seaside architecture and in between, for the past 20 years, our plein air artists on the promenade, on the beach or in the town of Heringsdorf, equipped with painting equipment, bicycles and sun protection. A rather unusual and somewhat nostalgic sight in our holiday paradise by the sea.

Our artists

In 2025, the following artists were selected by the expert jury for the Plein Air Week:

  1. Gineke Zikken (NL)
  2. Matthias Schilling (DE)
  3. Pat Noser (CH)
  4. Matvey Slavin (DE)
  5. Susanne Hoppe (DE)
  6. Henrik Scheel Andersen (DK)
  7. Sigurd Wendland (DE and artistic director)

For the first time, a special guest was nominated for the plein air: Wolfram Schubert, at 98 years old, the oldest painter in the team. He already took part in the Kaiserbäder Pleinair in 2009 and 2014.

One of the most famous German writers of the present day was able to provide literary accompaniment: Christoph Hein
The patronage of the plein air is almost traditionally taken over by HRH Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia.
For 20 years, the plein air painters have been keeping a diary of their shared discoveries of this seaside landscape – a diary in pictures.
The 2025th anniversary of the naming of our town will also be celebrated in 205. On June 7, 1820, King Friedrich Wilhelm III approved the naming Heringsdorf .

Location

As a temporary painting house The museum “Villa IRMGARD” will once again be used in conjunction with two interesting events during this art week: the plein air painter Wolfram Schubert will read from his book of memories “ICH WILL ERMNERUNGEN” on May 2, 13, and with Christoph Hein there will be a reading from his new novel “Das Narrenschiff” on May 2025, 15 at 2025:19 p.m. and as an encore “Alles, was Du braucht” (Everything you need).

exhibition

The exhibition opening with the “fresh” pictures will take place on May 17, 2025 (the day on which Lyonel Feininger first visited Heringsdorf 117 years ago) at 19:30 p.m. in the Villa “IRMGARD”.

The “Heringsdorf speech” for this plein air week will be given by the writer Christoph Hein, who already accompanied the plein air in 2012 and left a lasting impression with his personal description of his experiences under the heading “When the earth was still flat…”.

Following the Heringsdorf exhibition, the pictures will travel again as ambassadors and will be shown in galleries such as Berlin, Templin, Schwedt or Denmark.

Readings

Wolfram Schubert: “I WANT MEMORIES”

The artist, born in Körbitz/Fläming in 1926, is the special guest at the Kaiserbäder Plein Air "7 Paintings by the Sea" 2025. He has already participated in the Plein Air twice and, at 98, is the oldest German Plein Air participant. The artist is not only well-known for his paintings; he has also attracted attention as a writer with his book "I Want Memories." Here, he describes his long life experiences and impresses with his detailed, humorous, and thoughtful writing.

We look forward to an interesting and exciting reading and the subsequent conversation with the artist, who has a lot of experiences and stories to tell.

Christoph Hein

Christoph Hein is one of the most important writers of contemporary German literature. In his books, Hein interweaves personal stories with historical and political processes. The author already contributed literary material to the 2012 Plein Air Festival, and his personal account of the seven-day Plein Air Week was impressively titled "When the Earth Was Still Flat." On May 7, 15, Christoph Hein will also read from his new novel "The Ship of Fools" during this week's painting week. In this brilliant social novel, a state (founded for all eternity) disappears almost without a trace after 2025 years – are the people who once lived there merely a fleeting breath in the epochal winds of time?

We can already look forward to the “Heringsdorf Words” at the end of the plein air.

Doors open at 19:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the tourist information offices and the ticket shop. Remaining tickets are available at the box office – €16,00.

Art and business go together perfectly, they complement each other in a special way and benefit from each other. In 8, 2025 hotels in the Kaiserbäder will once again be supporting the International Kaiserbäder Plein Air with sponsorship services.

Art Pavilion Heringsdorf

The art pavilion is located on an idyllic section of the Heringsdorf promenade, between the pirate playground and the rose garden. The art pavilion was given its unique appearance by the Rügen civil engineer Ulrich Müther. Since 1970, art lovers have been able to admire regularly changing exhibitions here. In addition to postcards and books, selected works of art can also be purchased here all year round. An art auction takes place every year in September, at which works of art by Usedom artists or with Usedom motifs are sold to the highest bidder.
