Welcome to the Hans Werner Richter House

Immerse yourself in a time long gone, the time when literature awoke after 1945... In the small building with the red double doors, the estate of the famous son of Bansin awaits you: Hans Werner Richter - author, man of letters, resistance fighter, moderator, initiator and head of the famous elite writers' association "Group 47". Take a look at Carola Stern's specialist library or Hans Werner Richter's study, marvel at the countless, diverse pictures that the Richter family collected or the originals by Günter Grass. Listen to our small afternoon readings and the amusing, musical, poetic evening events. Visit our changing exhibitions, browse in our library and come by to chat with us.

study

At the opening there was only the writer's study in the original. Little by little, Toni Richter filled all the rooms with life. The study, completed before 2000, comes from Munich - the Richters' main residence. There are a few postcards from Bansin, his homeland, on his desk - above them is the typewriter - it's as if you could hear the rattling and Richter would come back to his desk at any moment to receive the invitations to the "Group 47" that are so coveted in the literary world “Send meetings.

“We believed that in the long term the mentality of a people would be shaped by their literature.”

Professor Dr.
Hans Dieter Zimmermann

“You will not believe it possible how an object changes simply through representation,” Hans Werner Richter once said to the writer Barbara König: “Even if everything that is reported is true, it is still not entirely true.”
