The towns developed from the Achterwasser, where food and materials for house building were available. It was also very important as a connecting route to other towns. The church in the Lieper Winkel was first mentioned in 1216. The monks of Grobe Monastery brought the faith to this quiet corner, which at the time was only accessible by boat.
