Exhibition of the Polish artist Hubert Czerepok
The title of the exhibition by Polish artist Hubert Czerepok, “And yet and in spite of all this, one day people will NOT live like brothers,” paraphrases Maxim Gorky’s famous quote, which he wrote in 1922 during his stay at the Villa Irmgard in Heringsdorf.
The exhibition brings together drawings based on photographs of events that took place 100 years apart: the Bucha massacre and archive images of the famine in Ukraine (Holodomor), which claimed the lives of several million Ukrainians. By drawing on the past, the artist reveals that history always repeats itself twice.
Czerepok’s light sculptures will also be on display in the Villa Irmgard Museum, including the astonishingly contemporary neon sign “Americans, I am afraid of” from 2016.
