From Tsar Nicholas II to Lenin, Villa Irmgard

Two individuals, born at the end of the 19th century, had a profound influence on the political and social development of Russia: Tsar Nicholas II and Vladimir Ulyanov, known as Lenin. Both attempted to impose leadership on the vast Russian Empire, a backward agrarian nation, through their respective styles of government. What motivated them? To what extent did their backgrounds influence their actions? How did Russia become Soviet Russia, and what did this mean for the millions of people living under the successive social systems? What works of Russian realism emerged in literature, such as those by Chekhov, Tolstoy, and Gorky? The speaker will explore these questions and the epochal upheavals in Russian society in his multimedia presentation.
